Chapter Sixteen

Ivan’s snarling something in my face, but I can’t hear him above the ringing in my ears. He turns and walks away and as my head clears, I can focus on the carnage in my living room.

Daron is sitting on the floor holding Ennis in his arms, screaming. Ennis is laying there with his eyes half open, his face a ghastly gray color, his white T-shirt saturated with blood, a puddle of it around him on my wood floor, soaking into Daron’s jeans.

I watch Ennis, noting how his breathing is fast but shallow, seeing how his eyes drop closed and his respirations slow and become imperceptible within seconds. I see how Daron presses both hands hard over Ennis’s chest, as though he can keep the life in there, even though it looks like most of it is already on my floor. He sobs and rocks Ennis in his arms, his face pressed into his hair. I sink down to the floor and sit there with my back against the couch, unable to move.

It’s only an insistent vibrating against my leg that rouses me. I don’t know how long I’ve been sitting there. I fumble my cell from my pocket and look at the screen almost in confusion.

Logan calling.

I accept the call with a numb hand. “Hey.” A voice like warm chocolate washes over me and suddenly I remember my life, before it turned into blood. “What kind of bread do you like?”

“Logan,” I cry, “I need you.”

He only pauses for a moment but maybe it’s enough for him to hear Daron wailing in the background before he says, “On my way,” and the phone goes dead. It falls from my hand. I stare again at Ennis.

Ennis is a worse color than he was before, his skin waxy, lying still in Daron’s arms. Daron is drawing in deep, shuddering breaths, hysterical, shaking with shock, a smear of blood down one side of his ashen face, his hands covered in it, still pressed tight to the bullet-wound in Ennis’s chest.

I know Daron and I should be trying to save Ennis’s life, rather than mourn him already while it slips away from him, but my body won’t move. I don’t know how long it’s been when I hear a crash. I don’t know whether Logan took my key or not, but he’s kicking my front door in regardless. He barges into the lounge and I see him take in the scene before his eyes flicker just once to me and I read his expression in shock. Thank God it wasn’t you.

He’s on his knees in front of Daron in a second, wrestling to take Ennis out of his arms. But Daron clings to him with a death-grip, moaning, until Logan shouts at him. “For fuck’s sake, Daron, let him go!” He shoves Daron backward hard, dropping Ennis to the floor where his head thuds hollowly against the wood.

Daron weeps, curling up in a ball, but Logan pays him no attention because he has his cell out of his pocket and he’s dialing.
